Céad Míle Fáilte to the P6 Page ☘️

12th Sep 2024

P6 are loving their WAU topic ‘An Gorta Mor’ - The Great Hunger, all about the Irish potato famine of 1845. We researched what life was like at this time and enjoyed finding out who the “gentleman that paid the rent’ was… ask your child and see what they say 🐷

We have started our class novel Under the Hawthorn Tree and written a very poignant diary entry about the day baby Bridget was buried.

After finding out where potatoes come from, and all their various uses, we watched a video of local farmer Jimmy Watson from Slans, rising the spuds in the fields around his farm. This led us nicely to a poem by the famous Irish Poet Seamus Heaney called ‘Digging’. It was lovely to hear the children’s responses to such an iconic piece of Irish literature.

Our art lessons have involved painting famine scenes in the style of Belfast artist Markey Robinson. We also used clay to make thatched cottages based on those from famine times … I think you will agree these look amazing so far!!

As we are learning a little bit of conversational Irish, Mrs Breen says go raibh maith agat P6, for all your hard work! 🇮🇪☘️
