Ice Eggs Hatch!
As part of our topic of Winter we were lucky enough to come across some mysterious eggs made of ice. In class we explored these strange objects. We looked closely at them through magnifying glasses and could see beautiful patterns inside. We thought there may have been an sea urchin or a hedgehog in the middle! We wanted them to melt so we added salt to the eggs and rubbed it in. This sped up the melting process a little. We also added food colouring to the eggs. The colour soaked in if the ice was melting. In the end we put the eggs in the storeroom overnight to let them melt in the heat. To our surprise the next day we walked into the classroom to discover that not only had the eggs hatched but that there was a trail of colourful feathers leading from the storeroom to the open window! Keep your eyes open around Portaferry for any strange colourful feathered creatures!
