Is it a scam? Safer Internet Day 2025 ❌🚨

3rd Feb 2025

Today in St. Mary’s we celebrated ‘Safer Internet Day’ by holding a very special assembly. The assembly was led by our new digital leaders, who have been selected by their teachers to assist with technology and ICT equipment but today they taught the school how to spot a scam online.

The digital leaders told us that if a scam seems too good to be true, it probably is. They also showed us examples of pop ups, what a scam might look like and how we should always speak to our trusted adults if we suspect that something may be a scam.

By the end of the assembly we were all pretty sure how to spot a scam and agreed that we would never fall for one! However, Mrs Fowler then revealed, to much shock and disappointment, that a secret scam had appeared in our school last week in the form of a poster for a free homework pass! Displayed around the school had been a poster advertising a homework pass for one month, if the children filled in a form with their name, school email and class … and over 40 children filled in the form! Luckily, it wasn’t a real scam but it was a good lesson in how easily we can be taken in by scammers and hand over personal details!

Remember, if it’s too good to be true, asks for your personal details or is a message that you’re not expecting… it could be a scam!
