P1 learn why it is important to use ๐Ÿงผ soap and ๐Ÿ’ง water to wash our ๐Ÿ– hands!!

22nd Sep 2022

In our topic All about me, we have been learning why it is important to wash our hands. We know that germs and bacteria can be on our hands, but we can’t see them! We wondered if there was some way we could grow bacteria ๐Ÿฆ , so we could see it, and also to prove that germs do not like soap and water!

We got some bread and put different handprints on it - a clean hand that had been washed with soap and water, a dirty hand that hadn’t been washed, a hand that had only been washed with water, and a slice of bread that had been rubbed on different surfaces around the classroom.

We have been watching our experiment over the last 2 weeks and checking each day with our magnifying glass, what has happened to the bread....

We couldn’t believe it when some spots (bacteria) started to appear on the bread... the dirty hand print left huge spots, the ‘around the room’ bread also had lots of yukky spots and the bread with the clean hand washed in soap and water had none! This proved to us that there are germs on our hands that we cannot see. There are also germs on surfaces like door handles that we cannot see, so we must wash our hands with soap and water to keep the germs away!
