P4 had a wonderful visit to Portaferry Library today. They met the librarians Louise and Shona who had prepared a Treasure Hunt for them to investigate all the areas within the library. The children loved reading the map and finding the blue bears which had been hidden in the different sections. The librarians also talked about the importance of joining the library and gave everyone a membership form. Mrs O’Neill had previously told the librarians about the P4 WAU topic ‘Waste & Recycling’ so the children were able to look at a range of fact books and complete a ‘Connect 4’ quiz on the topic.
The class are really realising that reading is an essential part of their learning journey in all subject areas. Solving worded Maths problems, spelling assessments, investigating WAU topics, completing comprehension pieces, home reading, class novel work, Accelerated Reader, Reciprocal Reading and visiting our school Book Fair are all ways in which reading is promoted in P4. There are many support systems in the local library and in the ‘Links’ part of our school website, should parents or children wish to access these services.
