P4 Comprehension & Problem Solving Heroes!🌟
P4 have been working extremely hard on their Comprehension and Problem Solving skills over the past few months as both have been the main focus areas for Literacy and Numeracy in our school. Every week, the P4 children read their guided reading book and discuss it with their teacher, assistant and parents. They are now able to access Accelerated Reader and complete quizzes based on each book. This is super comprehension. Recent Accelerated Reader results for P4 have been brilliant! They also work on a class book. This term it is ‘James and the Giant Peach’ and they complete activities associated with it. This is fantastic comprehension. They read across the curriculum from WAU to Religion and write one word or complete sentence answers. This is wonderful comprehension. They read and work out homework activities. This is also comprehension. So many comprehension activities happen in P4, especially those which deal with ‘Prediction’, ‘Making Connections’ and ‘Questioning’ which are three of the six super comprehension strategies.
For Problem Solving, the class continued to use the RUCSAC technique. They completed digit investigations and found lots of possible outcomes. Problem Solving is very closely related to Comprehension in that pupils need to be able to read, understand, choose, solve, answer and check their work. The P4 pupils have also been developing their multiplication skills using practical resources, follow-up workbook and textbook activities as well as Mathletics. Lots of logic and reasoning needed to solve lots of different calculations and word based problems.
P4 produced some great writing forms in recent times from fact pieces about their ‘Minibeast’ topic to pieces about their grandparents for ‘Grandparents Day’.
All this on top of learning their songs, hymns and prayers for the P4 Enrolment ceremony. Such a busy bunch! They are loving the quiet stillness of ‘Gather Round’, the lovely, reverent ‘Blessed be God’ and the upbeat ‘Apostles’ songs. Lots to look forward to in the coming weeks. Well done P4! Mrs O’Neill and Mary are very proud of your progress.🌟
