P4 Literacy - Comprehension🌟

21st Oct 2024

Over the past two months, P4 have been working on the whole school Literacy focus of ‘Comprehension’. They have been looking at the importance of ‘really reading and really understanding reading material’ prior to the beginning of their Accelerated Reader journey.

The class have enjoyed listening to and sharing a range of fact and fictional books from their reading books at home to ‘Reading for Enjoyment’ books in school, ‘Time to Read’ programme, WAU topic books, interactive whiteboard books as well as an extensive range of written comprehension activities.

Word study from these books involved decoding new words, searching for rhyming words, finding nouns, verbs and adjectives as well as identifying punctuation within a text. The big focus has been on one of the six strategies of comprehension; that of prediction. The boys and girls predicted beginnings, middles and endings of books based on book covers and reading a little at a time. They loved using their pre-printed ‘crystal balls’ to help them with their prediction skills.

As P4 draw towards the Halloween holidays, we urge the P4 parents to continue to encourage all these skills so that the children maintain their standards. It is Libraries NI week from 21st - 27th October and Mrs O’Neill really would like P4 to continue to support their local library in Portaferry by dropping in for some fact or fiction books. Parents, you can help by sharing books together and asking lots of what, where, when, why, how, can questions about the books. You can also find lots of information, games and suggestions about this NI libraries initiative and reading in general on www.bbc.co.uk/bookweekni

Don’t forget that the P4, ‘Design and Build a Lighthouse’ WAU/Literacy/Art projects are due in school by the end of the week.
Thanks for your continued support.
