P6 create the heartbeat of Irish Music ☘️

21st Nov 2024

Ancient Irish music dates back more than 2000 years. It is said that the Celts brought traditional-style music to Ireland. They also brought lots of instruments, such as the harp. The harp is one of the official emblems of Ireland, which shows how important it is in Irish culture.

Historically Irish music and songs were not usually written down. Instead, adults taught children to play the music by ear. The children learned the songs by heart. Learning the music in this way is called the 'oral tradition'. Portaferry has a long history of traditional Irish music and some of our own pupils are traditional ceoltoírí which is the Irish word for musicians.

The bodhrán is known as the heartbeat of traditional Irish Music so P6 decided to create our very own miniature heartbeats … the intricate detail the children included in these designs is phenomenal and Mrs Breen is super proud of each and every boy and girl 🎶🎶🎶
