Run/Walk Around Ireland Challenge ☘️🌍
During the month of April, we all took part in a special challenge to help us to move more. The challenge ‘Run Around Ireland’ really helped to develop our fitness, maths and WAU skills and knowledge. Developing fitness and active travel is also part of our Eco Council’s action plan.
The older classes spent some time working out the distances in KM and Mile to certain land marks in Ireland from our school. We then set ourselves a challenge to walk and run as much as we could as a school. Every morning we set out for a walk and measured how far we traveled, then recorded and totalled this. We were lucky to receive some high vis vests from SUSTRANS, a charity we are working with to encourage active travel.
Once we measured the distance traveled by each class, we multiplied this by the number of pupils in our class to get a total.
As a class, P3 reached the Glenveagh park in Donegal,
P4 covered the distance to Dublin and back,
P5 reached the Cliffs of Moher and back again,
P6 walked and ran as far as The Blarney Stone and
P7 reached the most southernly point of Ireland in Cork!
In total as a school, we have travelled a GIGANTiC 3431.3 KM!! Roughly, this is a little bit more than the perimeter of Ireland (3171 km). So as a school we can truly say that we ‘walked around Ireland’. Well done to all the boys and girls for their involvement in this challenge. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting outside in the mornings, improving our fitness and learning a little bit more about the world around us!
