Smartie Fractions In P5
Yesterday our class enjoyed exploring the concept of fractions using smarties as a learning aid. The children worked in small groups counting the total number of sweets. The pupils then sorted the sweets into their colours and made fractions. By the end of the lesson, the children were able to determine that fractions are part of something and not a whole number. Mr Smyth was very impressed that the children recognised that fractions get smaller as you move down the fraction wall. We used the concept of cake slices to help with our explanations. We look forward to progressing onto equivalent fractions, fractions of a set and adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. Impressive work P5!
