Traditional Irish Music Returns to Saint Mary's

13th Jan 2025

We are very excited to welcome All Ireland Fiddle champion and Ceoltás teacher Niall McClean to our school and we are equally delighted that Niall has agreed to give group music lessons to our pupils in a range of traditional Irish musical instruments, including the tin whistle, bodhrán and fiddle.

Lessons are multi-instrumental with the goal of getting our pupils playing together as a group. For anyone playing the whistle you will need a standard D whistle and these are available for approximately £8. A second-hand fiddle is best as it has already been ‘played in”. These are approximately £40 and a Junior bodhrán should cost approximately £40. Niall will have some spare instruments for the first couple of weeks.

Niall plans to run a total of 13 lessons between Friday 17th January and Easter. Alongside the lessons, Niall will also issue tutorial videos and notes to aid the learning process. The total cost for the 13 weeks is £104. This does not need to be paid immediately. To discuss the overall cost and possible family rates, or for any questions or queries you may have regarding the lessons, Niall has asked that you contact him directly on mobile 07960072218.

If you wish for your child to participate in these music lessons, please contact the school directly via email at info@stmarysps.portaferry.ni.sch.uk

This is a wonderful opportunity for our pupils and absolutely great to get traditional music back to Portaferry, where the Ards Ceoltás was formed many years ago!!
